Arm Lift

Arm Lift in Chicago by Dr. Makhlouf

An arm lift, or Brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure to reshape the upper arm. The goal of an arm lift surgery is to enhance definition and shape, contour, and create a smoother, slimmer appearance, to reduce unwanted fat, tighten tissue, and remove excess skin. The two most common reasons for an arm lift surgery are if the patient has been unable to lose weight and desires a reduction in the size of their arms or they have recently lost a significant amount of weight and now have excess skin.

The two most common reasons for an arm lift surgery is if the patient has been unable to lose weight and desires a certain appearance for their arms or they have recently lost a significant amount of weight and now have either an imbalance in contour or excess skin.

Arm Lift Procedure

The arm lift procedure is done on an outpatient basis and is often completed in about two hours for both arms. No drains are used and the patient can take a shower the next day. The main drawback to a Brachioplasty is that the standard procedure requires a large incision that is visible along the length of the inner arm. The resulting scar is readily visible and of poor quality due to the thinness of the skin where it resides.

Dr. Makhlouf has resolved this drawback for a large number of patients by designing a new and safer location for the scar. The goal is to have the scar in the undersurface of the arm so it is not visible in the front or back view with the arm elevated. Although the scar is visible it is not very noticeable and is very well accepted. Dr. Makhlouf presented this work as an invited speaker at the national meeting in Denver in 2011.

Care and Recovery

After the procedure, your arms will be wrapped in bandages and compression garments are provided for use during the first three weeks after surgery to support the healing and help with swelling and contouring. Most patients feel well enough to return to work in about a week, but they should avoid exercise, strenuous activity, and heavy lifting for the first few weeks.
