Blepharoplasty (Eye Lid Surgery) in Chicago
Blepharoplasty, also referred to as an eyelid lift or eyelid surgery, is a procedure designed to correct the changes that occur around the eyes such as puffiness, bulging fat, and wrinkling of the skin, due to aging or heredity. It is considered a corrective surgical procedure that can enhance a patient’s life. Eyes, being an expressive facial focal point, allow others to read into emotions, such as joy and sadness, as well as display aging and tiredness.
Eyelid Lift Procedure Goals:
Smoothed skin surrounding the eyes
Wider opened eyes
Reduced or removed fat bulging around the eye
A more aesthetic surface for makeup application to better highlight the shape and color of the eye.
Blepharoplasty Factors
There are multiple variables that affect the perception of the size of the eyes. These include: the shape of the bony structure of the eye called the orbit, the strength and the attachment of the muscles that pull and open the eyelids called the Levator muscle, and whether there is excess skin present. Eye symmetry, eye shape, and brow position are also evaluated prior to surgery. Markings made prior to the procedure are vital and needed to be very meticulous to ensure a satisfactory result.
Blepharoplasty Procedure
Upper Blepharoplasty
Making the incisions accurately is the most important step. Dr. Makhlouf designs the incisions in the area very carefully and estimates the amount of skin and fat that need to be removed from each side. In upper blepharoplasty surgery, fat can be redistributed to avoid an emaciated look. Skin and fat are resected one side at a time in the same way. Particular attention is given to the fat pocket present in the part of the eyelid towards the nose. The symmetry of the eyelids is checked and the incisions are closed.
Lower Blepharoplasty
In lower blepharoplasty surgery, under-eye bags are reduced and wrinkles are softened. Frequently, the primary focus is the bulging of the fat around the eye. Dr. Makhlouf frequently performs the fat resection through the inside edge of the eyelid, a technique called the transconjunctival blepharoplasty. This avoids an external and visible incision and avoids cutting the eyelid muscles to reach the fat. The extra skin in the lower eyelid can be treated with a chemical peel or removed depending on its severity.

Care and Recovery
Most patients will need to rest for one to two weeks from normal activities following the procedure. Swelling, bruising, and slight discomfort are normal during the first few days of recovery, however, patients of Dr. Mahklouf have reported minimal pain and the majority have only required pain medication on the first day of recovery. The sutures are removed at 5-7 days. Scarring is also quite minimal with both an upper and lower blepharoplasty. Due to their location in the eyelid crease, scars are not noticeable and not visible when the eyes are open.
